How Many Social Networking Communities Can We Handle?

…and can we handle them efficiently? Apsense has just released their “Brand Marketing Center” which appears to be linked to the most popular and usual social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest and Squidoo.
As most of us know “branding” or making a name for yourself on the internet is very important and can hinder or greatly improve your standing in the social media circles. As we all work day after day to create a presence so people will know us and remember us and follow our written words or follow in our foot steps in a chosen program or team, there has to come a time where you make a decision on which and just HOW many social networking communities we can keep up with and still offer valuable information and help to our followers.
The Apsense Brand Marketing Center takes just a minimal amount of time to set up (about 5 minutes as they state), as I’ve already done so; http://www.apsense.com/brand/MonnaEllithorpe It reminds me somewhat of a combination of Pinterest and LinkedIn or maybe just because it is pretty much propagated when you set up your brand page.
I cannot even begin to count the number of social communities there are on the internet and how many that I belong to, as I am sure you belong to many of them too. Some are linked together which will post to others automatically and some are not and you have to post to them manually. You have to be very careful when setting up your communities or you will end up with numerous postings of the same things going out which can either label you as a spammer, a very rude person or just plain not paying attention (myself included a lot of times).
For example; I set up my Apsense Brand Page and tweeted it. Before I knew it, there were 3 of the same postings on my Facebook wall, because of the linking between the social networking sites. Although I sure did not mean to post so many times to Facebook, it shows that I have not mapped out my social media strategy very well, in terms of posting; where it is going to show up; how many times it is going to show up; etc.
So basically, I am saying that while you are working towards branding yourself on the internet, take note of how all of the social networking communities interact with each other when you post. If you are not sure, after you make a post, go look at some of them social media sites and see just how many times your 1 post has shown up and make some changes in your social media strategy.
Do you find it overwhelming to see the amount of social networking communities there are out there? Do you find a few and stick with those or do you try to keep up with all of them? Let other readers know what works for you; good or bad. Share with your friends and associates.

Hi Monna – you’re right, there is so much out there, and it’s not easy to avoid the duplication of posts on sites due to so many connections!!
Apsense looks interesting – can you automate things to post in there from other sites, or do you have to post manually in there and it gets shared out to other places? cripes, did that make sense!!
great thought provoking post

Hi Jacs, I had to go look again and make sure but from what I can see Apsense is only linked to LinkedIn. Unless there have been major changes I’ve missed, you have to post manually. So you would only have to pay attention to what you have linked to LinkedIn. There is a lot there; like a whole marketing system in 1 place. I’m not upgraded there but still find good use out of my free position. Any yes, you made sense and I knew what you meant, LOL. Monna
I tend to stick to a few tried and true methods. It can get waaay to crazy. I think with sticking to the most popular and most trafficked is the best way to go.

Hi Vanessa, Thanks for stopping by. I agree; too many is just way too confusing and I don’t believe really helps in the long run.
I’m still getting my feet wet with social networking but this post REALLY helps. I’ll be sure to check out the link you posted. Sound very interesting.

Hi Christy, There are a lot of communities, as you well know. Try not to overwhelm yourself with them. Thanks for your visit. Monna
Currently I am only active on 3 sites, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest with Facebook being the main site. I probably won’t be adding any more, anytime soon. I want to make sure I have connections built and have a good handle on these before try adding something else to my plate.

Hi Jean, You have the right idea. In my opinion, you cannot make that many great and meaningful connections if you have 1000s of friends you don’t really know. I have many friends on my Facebook profile but realize, I actually have not talked to many of them. Some of them are now very good friends I’ve had for quite a while. It will take some time to correct my error in judgment from years past of “collecting friends” but I consider it a lesson learned. Thanks for your visit and comment. Monna
Thanks for the great post Monna. Many of us out here in the “ether-lands” are becoming overwhelmed with all the places on the Internet to network and share information. I’m definitely going to checkout “Apsense” and see if I can “make sense” of all my connections.
Hi Kim, You are welcome and Thanks for your visit and comment. I really like Apsense as one of the ones that I feel very comfortable in and feel that the members do get a lot of response from the other members. Have a great weekend. Monna
Great post Monna! What an important question to ask ourselves as there are new and flashy social networking site popping up left and right! They seems to be shinier and more attractive to the point where we just have to go in and play…LOL…But you are so right about having to be careful as this takes a big chuck of time in our schedule. Thank you Monna!

Thanks Nathalie for stopping by and leaving a comment. So true that each new one coming up seems to be “shinier and better” than the other. I think in order to make the best use of our time, we all need to find a few that work for whatever niche we are in and stick to those. The communities can be a distraction just like all the new programs or systems that try to lure us away from our goals. Monna
