Published Author Roundup One

Published Author Roundup

The original idea for this post was that I had asked the most recent authors that I had worked with; “What did it feel like the first time you saw your name on your first published book?”

I received five responses to my question and each were in a different form than what I had expected but that was entirely okay with me.  I just needed to think of a little bit more of a creative way of presenting the submissions I received.

I decided to use one in particular for the post this week.  I will post the others next week and the week after. I’m doing this for a couple of reasons; 1) If you suffer from migraine headaches, then you know how debilitating, disrupting and painful they can be. I suffered with them for years. 2) Joy Healey wrote such a wonderful tribute to the man ( John Woolgar (RIP) that co-authored her book, that I wanted to put forth a little extra tribute to him also.

So, we will start out with Joy’s post and her moving tribute to  John Woolgar.

joyhealeyMonna has kindly invited me to write about my experience of using her services to publish my eBook.

At one level it would be easy just to say “Great” and leave it at that, but that wouldn’t do justice to how well it went, especially as I was rather an a-typical “client.”

Monna is no doubt more used to dealing with experienced authors who know what they want, and are really excited to seeing their new work on show.

Sadly, with me, she was faced with a rather jaded “author,” trying to salvage something from a project that went badly wrong! To her credit, she didn’t let this stop her.

To cut a long story short, in my completely innocent days online, I fell for the “line” that if I worked 10 hours a day for 6 weeks, I could produce an online master-piece (in the form of an eBook) and retire in riches from the proceeds of the sales. This was as a complete newbie to the online world, all along-side running my offline business.

My bemused Internet Marketing coach reckoned without my perfectionist tendencies, and it probably took me as long as that just to produce the eBook. After which I had to start on the website, the blog, the lead magnet and the auto-responder series.

Then – worst of all – it turned out, the world would NOT beat a path to my website, credit card in hand, itching to buy. I was meant to market my product! Dear, oh dear.

I probably sound a bit lazy here. I’m not lazy. I actually worked far more hours than “suggested.” But I’d been over-optimistic and ill-advised as I’d never thought through the whole process.

Which of course is obvious if you stop to think about it.

But I didn’t, and I paid the price.

I limped through most stages, except the marketing – with predictable sales. Not many.

By then I’d had enough of the whole topic (Treating and Preventing Migraine with Complementary Therapy) so I didn’t renew my web-hosting when it expired.

I thought that would be the end of it, but somehow I couldn’t let go, and here’s why – which I haven’t actually gone into on my own blog. First a clue….

Why Is There No Author On The Title Page?

This isn’t an omission by Monna – she actually offered to add one for me. It wasn’t there on the eBook I originally published as a PDF, then sent to her for conversion into a Kindle book.

The reason there’s no author is that the book was written with a co-author and I owe so much him that, although his contribution was written with the knowledge that it would be published under my name, I wouldn’t actually feel comfortable to put just my name on the cover.

To further complicate the issue, I also had input from several other complementary therapists who are credited within the book – those who I know are still practising.

So if there were to be an author credit, it would probably be too long a list to fit on the cover!

But worst of all….

My Co-Author Died

My first interest in Complementary Therapy was stirred by a wonderful friend, John Woolgar (RIP).

I met John when he was a distributor for a well-known range of nutritional supplements. I had been attracted to the product by one of his articles because I was plagued by migraines and had been searching for a solution.

[Tweet “John recommended suitable products and worked really hard with me, suggesting remedies and life-style changes (detailed in the book) that finally rid me of my migraines.”]

I was so impressed with the results that I actually studied nutrition for a while then worked as a sub-editor for a UK-based professional nutrition journal.

The first version of my eBook was produced as part of the nutrition course.

Then – when I unwisely decided to try and sell it online – I invited John (also a migraine sufferer) to be a co-author and add a section on his own hands-on experiences.

He must have worked on it for many hours, during what I now suspect were times when he was seriously ill and knew it. Yet he still spent all that time unselfishly helping me by setting down his experiences.

John didn’t live nearby, so we hardly ever met up – just chatted by phone – so I couldn’t see any health deterioration.

He never told me about his illness so I was totally shocked when his wife wrote to tell me he had died. I felt I had never had chance to thank him properly for all he had done for me. Without going into details, he literally changed the course of my life – for the better.

A modest, honest and God-fearing man, with a great sense of humour – the world is a worse place for John’s passing.

So, my conscience kept nagging at me that he had spent so many of his last hours working on “my” book, and I had “given up” on his final gift to me.

Then, in an IM course I am studying, we learned the principle of “Take your product to the traffic,” an online book that can be found at Amazon.

Enter Monna Ellithorpe

Sorry it took so long to get to the point (that’s me all over) but I’m telling the full story partly in memory of John and partly in apology to Monna if I wasn’t a bright and optimistic author. That eBook has very sad memories attached.

However – thanks to Monna – I have now fulfilled what I feel was my duty to John, to publish what he worked so hard to write.

What Was It Like Working With Monna Ellithorpe?

When she published my eBook on Kindle, Monna took away from me all my stress and anxiety about doing something so new.

I’m very “time-poor” so it was great that Monna responded quickly to my original invitation to quote for the work. We had about a ten-minute Facebook chat, which cleared up my questions right away, and gave me confidence that Monna had understood my requirements.

Although Monna offered related publishing services, I didn’t feel they were right for me at the time, which she accepted without pressure. She gave me a price, I sent her the money and heaved a big sigh of relief that the job was off my plate.

We agreed our terms at the back end of a week and I told Monna not to worry about it until Monday. So I was very impressed and grateful to find that she had worked over the weekend to deliver for me. I know Monna has family responsibilities so this was really beyond the call of duty.

Monna delivered a first draft, picking up one or two mistakes I’d missed (thanks!) and when I “signed it off” she released it for me, and there it is, finally on Kindle.

In A Nutshell

Monna quickly grasped what I wanted her to do. From then it was job done, according to my spec, and fast. Very business-like approach. What more could you wish for?

Although my requirements were pretty a-typical, Monna handled this job completely professionally, and I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone else looking for publishing of any kind.

Perhaps after this happy and stress-free experience I may be inspired to produce more eBooks!

Thanks Monna.

Joy Healey

I LOVE Working With New Authors

I LOVE Working With New Authors

Terror In The North TowerFor the past few weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of working on the first book for a new author by the name of Alicia Osmera. “Terror In The North Tower”   which will be released on Amazon Kindle on May 28, 2016 but you can submit your name for a pre-order now so you can be one of the first to get this book the day it’s actually live to everyone online.  “I LOVE working with new authors.”

I really enjoy working with new writers to get their books published and love to have an already published author coming back to me for help with their next project. BG (Brenda) Jenkins has been working on a new book and I will be getting her book ready for self publishing in the near future.

Working on the manuscripts of these talented authors is awesome for me, as I get to read them “way before” anyone else gets to read them.

I also have a couple of new books in the outlining process but they will be put on hold until BG’s book is ready to go.

I’ve talked with many people who say they would love to write a book but they don’t know where to start or how. My last published book “Secrets To Personal Writing For Digital and Paperback Books” goes through some of the ways you can gain confidence in yourself to begin writing and then proceed on to sharing your work with the public.

About The Author – Monna Ellithorpe

There are pro’s and con’s to self publishing; Self-Publishing Your Own Book The Pros And Cons but working with me (someone who is experienced already at self-publishing) will save you some time and aggravation in the setting up process, leaving your mind free to develop and create your story.

There are so many different types of writers and authors online and each one will say they have the “correct answer” to your writing problem. Don’t believe it. Their correct answers may be the one that worked for them but it doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for you. YOU have to find out who you are and what your writing style will be. You want to be different from other writers in some way, so people will know who you are and remember who you are.

In the beginning, look for writers that you already enjoy reading their books. What do you have in common with the way they write? Or maybe as a writer yourself, while you like to read their books, your writing may follow a different path. Find a couple of writers and their blogs and start following them in their writing, their marketing and how they interact with their readers and learn from them. Don’t copy them, just learn.

I cannot stress enough on how important it is to keep a journal or a notebook or a recorder with you at all times and to actually use them. This will save you time in so many ways as you begin your writing career. I have created some blank journaling pages that you can download, print and use for your notes and/or ideas.

That’s it for this week. Please, if you have even the slightest thought of writing a book, short stories, poems or songs, don’t ignore it. Get in touch with me and let’s talk and see how to get your new career started.

Thank you for your visit and please share this post with your associates and friends. Encourage someone you know to write if they have thought about it and ever mentioned it. Have them contact me.

Have a wonderful weekend coming up.

Because You Have A Book To Write

Because You Have A Book To Write

Does this statement apply to you? I think it applies to many people if they would really be honest with themselves. Think about it. Haven’t you had some thoughts and story lines running around in your head? I think you do “Because You Have A Book To Write.”

What is stopping you?

1. Maybe you lack the confidence.
2. Do you think to yourself, “Why would anyone want to read what I write?”
3. You wonder what you would write about.
4. What would you do after you wrote your book?
5. How would I get it published?

The Kindle version of my new book, “Secrets To Personal Writing For Digital and Paperback Books” is now available.

Each and every day is a new beginning for all of us. If you just look beyond the obvious, there are so many ideas, story lines, twists and turns to weave into the pages of a book.

Maybe you are more inclined to write instructional books on how to do things. Go with what you are good at and have become an expert about.

If you think that maybe one more book on a certain topic has been done already; that’s true but a book hasn’t been written by you yet, has it? You have a different perspective and different ideas for the way your story will read or a different way to give instructions… Just Do It!

It would be greatly appreciated if you already have my book, to leave a comment on Amazon about it.

Share this post with your friends and associates and it will also be greatly appreciated.

Consistency In Writing And Blogging

Consistency in Writing And Blogging

Hi everyone. it’s been a month since I made a post on my blog. Shame on me. I’ve done pretty good at keeping up and posting consistently each week until the end of March 2016 but I won’t bore you with details, just know that I’m trying to work my way back to what I love to do online.

Have you noticed I’ve changed the look of my blog again? As a woman, I compare this to the need to rearrange my furniture in my house every now and then. LOL My Dad hated when I moved furniture when I was growing up and so did my husband. That never seemed to stop me though.

Okay, here’s my post and it will be a little bit of rambling on what I’ve been up in terms of content to help you in your writing and marketing, etc.

1. This one month’s break does prove that if you are not consistent with engagement with people and posting to your blog, then you will lose exposure and visitors to your site. There’s nothing new for them to read or learn, so they stop coming.

2. You can finally get a book done that you have been working on little by little. I decided to make it available as a PDF version first before the Kindle version comes out and then it will be released in paperback later on. I had forgotten the feeling of accomplishment that you have when you hit that “Publish” button on the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing site.

3. Love testing out new products and software for review. I’m looking forward to telling you about what I’ve found. Of course some were shared with me but I always like to give my own opinions, one way or the other about how something works or doesn’t work.

4. We are getting closer to the time that Alicia Osmera will have her first book published. It’s been great working with her and getting it ready to go. I find great joy in also seeing the excitement when I help new authors publish their first book.

5. Can you believe it? PAC (The Power Affiliate Club) is coming up on its 2-year anniversary in just a few days. We are running a 2-year anniversary contest and you could win free advertising. The contest runs from May 1, 2016 to May 31, 2016. Be sure to read the rules of the contest. If you are not already a member of PAC, better check it out soon.

6. I’ve decided to reactivate the Facebook group; Create Yourself Through Writing and Marketing. Join us in the group and start sharing your writing and get feedback and opinions from the other members.

Be aware that you might see some more changes on the blog until I decide on the theme I want to use. I welcome any suggestions or ideas you might have. Tell me what you think about the theme and its look at the time you are visiting.

Did you know there is a book called “Think and Grow Rich for Women by Sharon Lechter?” I didn’t know it and I grabbed my copy of it as soon as I saw it. It’s available in Kindle, Hardcover, Paperback, Audible and MP3 CD.

I’m sure you are familiar with the original book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napolean Hill. If not, you should read it. I’ve read the original off and on for years but never have made it all of the way through until finished.

Mr. Hill wrote the original, obviously from a man’s point of view and while men and woman both can benefit from the original, Think and Grow Rich for Women is written from a women’s perspective to wealth-building from a modern standpoint for women. I think this book is long overdue.

I’m finding a tremendous amount of new information and inspiration from Sharon’s book. If you decide to purchase the book, I’d love to hear your thoughts about it and did it help you any?

Kindle Version Should Come First

Kindle Version Should Come First1I’m in the process of proofreading and formatting the first book for a new writer, Alicia Osmera.  I’ve proofread, formatted and published quite a few paperback books through CreateSpace and for Kindle through Kindle Direct Publishing before this but with this book, I decided to do some research since we all know how fast things change online. I always want to provide the best service and do my best work for my clients.  It came to me that maybe I should publish the Kindle version first this time instead of the paperback version; Kindle Version Should Come First

The reason for this, we all know how much faster it is to purchase, receive and start reading your Kindle E-Book. Kindle books are most generally reasonably priced and definitely an “impulse buy.”  So after doing my research, I believe I am going to advise my client(s) that we should publish their Kindle versions first and I will be doing the same for my future books.

Kindle versions of electronic books can be edited and approved most of the time within 24 hours.  If you see a mistake or decide you want something changed (book cover, title, dedication, etc.) make your changes, upload the file again and usually in my experience, the changes will be approved in a matter of a few hours.   Read the rest of this entry
